As said, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"- and it is undoubtedly much less costly, prevention and protection are one of the actions to be taken into account to prevent or reduce the incidence of hearing loss damage. Prevention The following steps may help you prevent noise-induced hearing loss and avoid worsening of age-related hearing loss:
- Protect your ears. Reducing the time and intensity of your exposure to noise is the best protection. In the workplace, earplugs or earmuffs can help protect your ears from damaging noise.
- Have your hearing tested regularly. Consider regular hearing checkups if you work in a noisy environment, for example. If you already have lost some of your hearing ability, then it is strongly recommended to take the necessary procedures to prevent additional loss.
- Avoid recreational risks. Activities such as riding motorcycle, hunting, using power tools, or frequently listening to concerts can damage your hearing over time. Having hearing protectors in your ears or taking breaks from the noise can protect your ears. Consider turning down the music volume too.
- Manage stress levels. Anxiety and stress have been linked to temporary and permanent tinnitus. High levels of stress lead your body to go into fight, which is an instinctual reaction that fills your body with adrenaline to assist you either fight or escape from danger. This process puts much pressure on your nerves, body heat, blood flow, and more. It's commonly thought that this pressure and stress can affect your inner ear and contribute to tinnitus and hearing loss symptoms.
- Knowledge and Education. Educate your young children about their hearing and how delicate this process is. Be careful when you buy toys for them, some toys like guns and some electronic games can also be dangerous for hearing.
